**Josie’s POV**

The prison has a smell | can’t pinpoint. It’s like a mix of a school and a hospital. The lights are harsh fluorescent,

the kind that tries too hard to imitate natural daylight, but Instead, they give you a headache, and you can’t wait

to escape. | guess it’s fitting they use them in a prison. It’s like an extra layer of punishment.

“Are you okay, Babe?” Theo asks as we wait in the family room.

“Not really, what if | don’t hate him? What if | believe his story?” I ask.

“There's no right or wrong way to feel here. We can’t tell you what to feel or believe. In the end, the decision is

yours, and we will support you no matter what you decide, Axel says, coming up behindand running sof

the tension from my shoulders.

“I'm going to try and keep this about finding Harper. | can decide the rest later, but | do need you all to help me

decide if we can trust him near her. If we decide he can help us, we are going to expose our daughter to him,

and that is a decision we should make together,” | say.

“Josie, you should know that | plan to compel him, even if | have to do it by force. If you don’t want to be in the

room for that, then we will all understand. I’m going to ask him the harsh questions, and I'm going to go deep

into what happened to your mum before | let him anywhere near our daughter,” Deacon admits, and | am not

surprised. | expected as much.

“Can | talk to him first? | want to see if he givesthe truth,” | ask.

“Yes, but | would suggest you take only one or two of us in with you to start with, otherwise he may feel

threatened and go straight on the defensive,” D nods.

| look between my guys. How am | supposed to choose? Each of them offers their own version of support and

comfort and | want it all. | want Mason's fury and questionable morals when it comes to my safety. | want Axe’s

silent strength and barely controlled protectiveness. | want Luke's rational input and comforting touch. | want

Deacon's professionalism and steady objectiveness and | want Theo's wild humour and ability to keep me

grounded.

“Who?” | ask, unable to choose.

Deacon looks over our group before his eyes settle on Luke, and he nods towards him. “Take Luke in, the rest of

us will be observing and will communicate with you if needed. We will be so close it will be like we are in there

with you, he just won't be able to see us.”

“Okay,” | say with a shaky breath and Luke slides his hand into mine, giving it a squeeze.

“I won't speak unless you wantto. If at any point you wantto step in, you just letknow. Okay?” Luke

asks and | nod.

The door to the family room opens and Raff pops his head in. “They're ready for us,” he says, and | feel as

though my heart drops into my stomach.

Luke's hand grips mine tighter as we follow Raff and an armed prison guard through the tiled corridor.

“Let's go in here first,” Raff says, gesturing to the door he has just o

opened.

The room is dark, and | know it is the observation room before | even step in. | stop and take a breath, knowing

that when | walk into this room I'm going to see a window and behind it will be the man who provided half of my

to my mum down. Otherwise, | may just kill him before we have a chance to talk, and | really need him to talk, to

“Ready?” Axel asks, blocking the doorway and givinga moment to compose myself.

| take another steadying breath before summoning up all my determination, and then | raise my head. “Yes,” |

nod, and follow Axe in, with my hand in Luke’s and Theo behind us.

Dand Mace are already in there, their eyes focused on the man behind the glass. I finally turn to look at him, and

it’s a bit of an anticlimax. He doesn’t look like the menace Imagined him as for all these years. My mum's blue-

eyed demon looks, well, normal.

He has dark hair like mine, and his skin is pale, but | don’t suppose he sees much sunlight in here. | study his

too. As if he knows | am there his gaze suddenly rises to look at the glass and directly at me. The navy blue of

his boiler suit makes his eyes look even more blue as | study them.

Robert Masters is a handsman, with a build similar to Luke's. He is not at all scary-looking, but | know

appearances can be deceiving. I look at his hands, which are chained to the table. What power do those hands

hold? | am ready to find out...

“Okay, I'm ready. Let's do this,” | nod.

“You've got this, Babe,” Theo reassures.

“We are right here if you need us,” Axe nods.

“I won't hesitate to kill him if he so much as blinks the wrong way,” Mason grunts.

“Take your time, ask what you need,” Deacon encourages.

“I'll be right beside you,” Luke squeezes my hand.

“We have him under close monitoring, you have nothing to fear,” Raff assures before leadingto the door

next to the room we were in. He pushes the door handle down and opens the door for me.
