Mafia Kings: Valentino: Chapter 7 I moved into the Rosolini mansion later that afternoon. The plan had been to wait until next week - after I could retrieve all my clothes from my apartment in Florence - but a couple of things sped up the schedule.

My ex drovehome. The entire time, he complained bitterly about having to wait three hours and being dissed by a bunch of 'mafia goons.' "I could've taken 'em," he boasted.

Yeah. Sure, buddy. Keep dreamin'.

He was even more resentful when I didn't want to hook up afterwards.

"I drove you all that way and waited around for nothing?!" he fumed.

In the old days I might have given in, but all I could think about now was Valentino.

Why settle for hamburger (my ex) when you could have filet mignon? He drove off in a huff like a spoiled child when I didn't give him what he wanted.

When my parents found out where I'd been, they were ten times worse.

My mother saw the gigantic smile on my face and asked what was going on.

"I got a new job," I announced happily.

When I told her where, she blew her lid and went and got my father.

The two of them started screaming atabout how stupid I was being.

"What kind of a fool goes to work for a mafia family?!" "You'll shus in front of the entire town!" "Just watch - you'll end up in a shallow grave somewhere!" I decided I couldn't hang around for an entire evening of this, so I shut myself in the bathroom and used my cell phone to call the number Niccolo had givenin case of emergencies.

"Yes?" a man answered on the other end.

Not Niccolo's voice, and definitely not Valentino's.

"Uh, hi - I'm Caterina Martinelli. I just got hired this afternoon to work in the kitchen. My parents, are, uh, freaking out. Is there any way someone could cto pickup, like, right away?" "Someone will be there in 30 minutes." "Thanks. The address is - " "We already know the address." Then he hung up.

Well, that wasn't ominous at all.

Still, it was better than the two crazy people screaming atfrom the other side of the bathroom door.

I cout, brushed past them, and hurriedly went into my room to pack. I threw everything I had into my suitcase and waited out the screaming until a black Mercedes pulled up in the driveway.

Through the window, I could see a man in a black suit and tie get out of the car and head for the house. When I lugged my suitcase to the front door, my father stepped in front of me. "If you go out there and get in that car, you're never coming back in this house again. Do you understand me?” I glared at him furiously.

Nonna never would have said that to me.

Nonna would have askedplease not to go, and I probably would have listened to her. But even if I didn't, she would have never threatened to cutoff.

All the years of my parents never supporting- Of criticizing- Of comparingto my brothers and sisters - Of callinga slut - All my resentment and quiet suffering ccrashing down onin one single moment.

"Gladly," I snarled.

My father looked shocked. My mother gasped.

Then my father shook his head in disgust and stepped aside.

My parents at least had the good sense to be quiet when the mafia guy knocked on the door and I opened it. "I'm ready," I said.

He took my bag and headed for the car.

I followed him down the walkway, then looked back at my mother and father standing in the open door. My father was glaring athatefully.

My mother looked both heartbroken and disgusted.

Then my father slammed the door shut.

In contrast, the guy in the black suit held the rear car door open for me.

With a heavy heart, I got in the Mercedes, and we drove away.

In the months to come, I Facetimed my little sister occasionally con my phone.... But that was the last tI ever saw my parents.
