Ignoring my response, he pressed again, "Where are you?" "Forget it. I already know your answer," I replied curtly, ready to hang up.
But Ashton's voice stopped me. “Elaine, where are you? Are you at hor out somewhere?" His tone was firm, almost demanding.
The emotions I'd been suppressing suddenly erupted. "Who are you to tellwhere I can be? I'll go wherever I want! I..." Before I could finish ranting, Nora leaned over and grabbed the phone. “Mr. Drake, don't worry. She's with me. I'm her best friend." Then she turned toand whispered, "Be nice when you're asking for help." I playfully pushed her away, but Ashton's voice cthrough the phone again. "We'll talk again tomorrow when you're sober." Before I could protest, he hung up, leavingstaring at the phone in disbelief. "He thinks I'm drunk,".I muttered.

Still, maybe this was Ashton's way of rejecting me. After all, he had heardsay I wasn't into him. He probably thought I was messing with him or, worse, trying to use him.
The next morning, I woke up with a splitting headache, completely hungover. I didn't even know when Nora had left for work.
My phone rang loudly, rudely pullingout of my daze.
"Hello," I answered groggily, not bothering to check the caller ID.
"Ms. Hart, can you cto the amusement park now?" Victor's anxious voice cthrough the line.
I frowned. "Mr. Langston, I've quit. Didn't you hear? If you need something, talk to... Miles-Mr. Miles." "Ms. Hart, I need your help." Victor sounded desperate, which madesit up in bed.
I ran a hand through my tangled hair. "What do you want?" "You have to come. You'll understand when you get here," he replied, his tone cryptic.
I glanced at the time-it was already 10:00 am, and I was still in bed. I stretched lazily, enjoying the rare indulgence of doing nothing.
"I've already resigned. None of this concernsanymore," I reminded him.

There was a pause before Victor tried a different approach. "Elaine," he said nicke softly, switching to my nickname. "If you don't come, I might lose my job tomorrow." I frowned, piecing things together. "Is this Logan's plan?" Victor hesitated before admitting, "Yes." I sighed, already regretting asking. "What does he want now?" Victor hesitated again, then finally said, "Actually, Mr. Mercer wants to... propose to you at the amuse ment park."
