Chapter 148

Jessica hesitated for a moment before stepping out, glancing back at Dorian as she closed the door.

Unfortunately, Dorian was deep in thought, his expression steely, and he didn't notice her gaze at all.

"Finn, what's going on? You're not divorced from Amara?" Dorian asked the moment the door to the lounge

clicked shut.

Finnian shrugged, keeping his cool. "Why would | get divorced? She cheated on me. If | divorce her, she's free to

find someone else. No way am | giving her that satisfaction."

Dorian could see right through that flimsy excuse-it might work on a toddler, but not on him.

He opened his mouth to say something but realized he wasn't in any position to give advice; he held back. His

relationship with Elysia was just as tangled, and he found it increasingly difficult to read her. He couldn't even

make sense of his own issues. What right did he have to meddle in someone else's?

With a sigh, he patted Finnian on the shoulder and turned to leave.

The lounge was silent now. While Finnian was musing over something, his phone on the table buzzed. It was his

grandfather calling.

Finnian wasn't in the mood to answer, so he leaned back on the couch, letting the phone vibrate until it finally

stopped.

At the Everly family estate, Kevin listened to the voice mail, his brow furrowing as he groaned, "Why isn't he

picking up? What's he doing?"

After sthought, Kevin switched gears and dialed Amara's number instead.

"Hello, Ama."

Amara picked up quickly, answering after just a few rings. Kevin didn't waste a moment. "You didn't get divorced

today? What happened?"

He couldn't hide the relief in his voice.

Amara was reading on her couch, but she couldn't focus on the words. Her mind was consumed by the day's

events. Now, with Kevin bringing it up again, she felt the

weight of it all, though sheel.net"

knew she had to respond.

"No, we didn't," Amara confirmed.

To prevent him from getting any hopeful ideas, she added, "Finnian doesn't want to. He still believes | cheated on

him, and he's holding onto this grudge, refusing to letgo."

"Kevin," she continued, her voice tinged with fear, "I'm a bit scared."

Kevin was taken aback. "Ama, what are you scared of?" he asked, bewildered.

Amara lowered her voice. "I'm afraid Finnian might hurt me. He hatesnow. What if he has someone beat me

up or worse? What if one day he decides to havekilled? | guess no one would notice."

Of course, Amara didn't actually believe Finnian would go that far, but she knew Kevin would try to persuade her

to reconcile with Finnian.

However, since she and Finnian never truly got along, there was nothing to reconcile. To preempt any of Kevin's

attempts, she exaggerated her fears.

“Oh, sweetheart, you're overthinking it,” Kevin reassured her quickly. “Finn's not like that. He wouldn't do

anything illegal."

"Kevin, | used to think Finnian was a generous guy too, but turns out he's someone quite narrow-minded, | mean,

look at this mess. How can | trust your assurances when he's already pulled a stunt like this? Don't get me

wrong, Kevin. It's not that | don't trust you, it's him | can't trust. I'm genuinely scared."

Kevin paused, caught between his relief that the divorce hadn't happened and the uncomfortable reality of

Finnian's motives which were entirely against what he'd supposed, leading to his inability to

rebut.

In the end, he offered more reassurances, insisting that Finnian had a good heart

and wouldn't intentionally harm her. Only then did Amara feel a slight sense of relief.
